Patients who are well-prepared for the mommy makeover surgery will usually achieve safe and desirable results in a shorter period of time and with reduced risk.

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will guide the patient about the steps to be taken for pre- and post-surgical preparation. Salient, terrific, and board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie MD provides mommy makeover surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Precautions to be Taken

Patients should stop smoking or consuming tobacco in any form at least two to three weeks prior to the mommy makeover surgery. Smoking is known to delay healing and increase the risk of surgical complications as nicotine in cigarette smoke prevents free flow of oxygen in the blood.

The patient should also stop the use of any herbal and vitamin E supplements as well as blood thinning medications. Patients may have to alter the schedule of any prescribed drugs in consultation with the physician. These preventive measures may have to be in place for about two to four weeks.

Practical Arrangements

For safe healing, the patient is required to spend a few days at home to recover after the surgery. Therefore, working women should apply for about one or two weeks of leave prior to the procedure. Even those who are not working should be prepared mentally to stay home and minimize social engagements during the early healing period. Transport arrangements from the surgical facility to home as well as aftercare should also be planned well in advance.

In order to ensure that the patient is not put under any undue stress during the post-operative healing phase, she should completely pressing household tasks well before the surgery. A ‘recovery kit’ may be prepared in advance, which would include various handy items that the patient will need during the initial recovery phase. These would typically include:

  • Antibiotics and any prescription drugs
  • Ice packs
  • Over the counter pain medication
  • Bandages
  • A set of pillows to keep the head elevated
  • Comfortable, button-down garments

A Day before the Surgery

Before the mommy makeover surgery, it is important that the patient thoroughly washes the hair, for it will help reduce the risk of infection during the surgical procedure. At least for 48 hours before the surgery, she should avoid alcohol consumption. In order to feel well-rested, the patient should have a good night’s sleep before the surgery.

On the Day of the Surgery

The patient and her attendant should have an idea about how long the surgical procedure would take. Thereafter, the patient will be moved to an observation area for a couple of hours before she is allowed to return home. After the procedure, the surgeon or their staff would also provide a detailed list of recovery instructions to the patient’s attendant, friend, family member, and/or spouse before they leave for their home.
