Body Contouring

There are numerous health and aesthetic benefits to achieving dramatic weight loss. However, your skin and tissue may lose elasticity following significant weight loss. The skin is sometimes unable to conform to the newly reduced body size.

Surgical body contouring following weight loss can be useful in removing excess sagging fat and skin. It improves the shape of underlying supporting tissues at the same time. The result is smoother contours with better proportioned appearance.

Body contouring cosmetic surgery procedures performed by Dr. Gary Motykie may include:

  • Arm lift: correction of sagging upper arms
  • Breast lift: correction of flattened and sagging breasts
  • Lower body lift: correction of sagging buttocks, abdomen, and thighs
  • Medial thigh lift: correction of sagging inner thigh
  • Tummy tuck: correction of excess skin hanging over the abdomen
  • Buttock lift: restoring a shapelier and rounder rear end

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides body contouring surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities.

Types of Incisions

There are large incisions involved in all body contouring procedures for removing excess skin. These incisions can be extensive in many cases. The pattern and length of incisions depends on the location and amount of excess skin that requires removal. It also depends on surgical judgment and personal preference.

Dr. Motykie uses advanced techniques for placing the incisions in strategic locations. This allows the incisions to be hidden by regular clothing. It can take 1 – 2 years for the results of your body contouring plastic surgery procedure to be complete.

Types of Body Contouring Procedures

Body lift

This treats the abdomen, sagging buttocks, hips, waist, and outer thighs in the same procedure. Incision patterns differ depending on the surgeon and the patient. Dr. Gary Motykie can make a circumferential incision around the lower body for removing the belt of excess fat and skin.

Breast lift

The incision pattern in breast lift depends on the amount of excess skin that requires removing. It may include one or more incisions made in a circular pattern around the areola. In some cases, Dr. Motykie may choose to make a horizontal incision along the breast crease or a line extending to the breast crease from the areola. Breast implants may be recommended for enhancing the shape and size of breasts.

Arm lift

Your surgeon may make an incision from the underarm all the way to the back or inside of the upper arm to treat sagging skin of the upper arms. In case of multiple areas of excess skin, additional incisions may be required.

Thigh lift

Incision made in the groin can be used for reshaping the inner thighs. The incision would extend to the knee along the inner thigh. Dr. Motykie may need to make an incision extending from the groin to the hip for improving outer thigh contours.

Brazilian Butt Lift

Excess fat from other body parts is transferred to the buttocks to increase their size. Ideal candidates should have enough fatty deposits for performing the procedure. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for body contouring surgery.

Tummy Tuck

A firm and flat abdomen is the mark of a beautiful and attractive body contour. Tummy tuck when personalized to your needs can help in improving the overall abdominal shape for several years. Tummy tuck can be helpful in tightening and reshaping the abdominal area.

It can also help in achieving a slimmer and more aesthetically pleasing overall appearance. You can dramatically improve the way your clothes fit and look by having a firmer and flatter midsection. This can help you feel more comfortable and confident in your body.

Dr. Gary Motykie will tighten the abdominal muscles and remove excess, sagging skin during the procedure. He will correct a protruding belly to leave the midsection better toned and flatter. Tummy tuck is a popular procedure for men and women. In particular, they are recommended for women whose bodies have undergone significant changes from pregnancy or weight loss.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Types of Abdominoplasty Procedures

Full Abdominoplasty

An incision around the navel and across the lower abdomen is made during a traditional tummy tuck. Dr. Motykie will tighten the muscles and remove excess skin. Liposuction may be used for contouring the abdomen as well. The surgery involves removal of skin from above the navel to the pubic region and is usually performed after obesity, pregnancy or genetic laxity.

Mini Abdominoplasty

A single incision is made in this type of abdominoplasty. The incision can be a few inches in length or spanning the entire abdomen. Dr. Motykie will tighten slack muscles, remove excess skin and use liposuction for refining the area through the incision.

An ideal candidate would have protrusion and laxity below the navel. Mini tummy tuck cosmetic surgery procedure is generally recommended for patients that are in good shape but are unable to achieve their body reshaping goals with diet and exercise alone.

Extended or High Lateral Tension Abdominoplasty

The incisions can be made longer for addressing the problem if you have excess skin in the hips or love handles. High lateral tension tummy tuck is the first procedure for addressing excess skin following pregnancy or significant weight loss.

The technique makes use of a deep tissue layer for supporting and maintaining the repair. The procedure transfers excess lift over the hip to the thighs for improving contours after a tummy tuck.

Duration of Results

Your results should be permanent provided you don’t put on significant weight or become pregnancy. However, plastic surgery cannot prevent normal aging effects. Tightened skin gets loose with age. However, if you put on a lot of weight following a tummy tuck, the abdominal skin may stretch again.

Likewise, the abdomen muscles will become loose again if you become pregnant. This is why it is recommended to wait until you have finished having children to get a tummy tuck. Dr. Motykie suggests that patients planning on losing weight should focus on attaining a moderate body weight before having the surgery.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for tummy tuck surgery.

Facelift Surgery

Rhytidectomy or facelift is a plastic surgery procedure that is used for creating a more youthful appearance. The procedure can be used for reducing the folds or sagging in skin, particularly in the jawline and cheeks. It can also be used for slowing or reversing the changes made on the face shape with age.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides facelift surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Cosmetic Benefits of Facelift

These are a few age-related changes that can be reduced through a facelift plastic surgery:

  • Sagging appearance of the cheeks
  • Jowls or excess skin present in the lower jawline
  • Deepening of the skin fold from the corner of the mouth to the side of the nose
  • Excess fat or sagging skin in the neck (this is done during a neck lift)

Traditional Full Facelift

You can achieve the most comprehensive results through a traditional facelift. The procedure can address sagging around the cheeks, deep creases that appear below the eyes, excess skin and fat under the chin, lines around the mouth, and jowls among other things. The treatment requires a larger incision since it targets a bigger area.

The incision runs all the way along the temple, around the ear, to the neck. You can address dramatic signs of aging through a full facelift. The treatment is popular among patients in their 50s and 60s.

Mid Facelift

Your surgeon can lift and tighten tissues around the cheeks and under the eyes in a mid facelift. The doctor will create an incision similar to a traditional facelift for performing this procedure. However, the incision will run deeper to allow the surgeon to lift the muscles that are usually not touched during a traditional facelift.

They may use facial implants and fat grafting for creating defined cheekbones and enhancing contours. The procedure is suitable for adults in their 30s and 40s since it doesn’t address all signs of aging.

Mini Facelift

Smaller incisions are involved in mini facelifts with shorter recovery time. This procedure is also called the weekend facelift. The cosmetic surgery procedure targets a smaller area, such as the neck, lower cheeks, and jaw. Your doctor will make the incision along the hairline going behind the ear.

They will lift muscles and remove fat and excess skin through the incision. Mini facelift is performed by many surgeons using endoscopic techniques. The procedure is common among younger patients with the first signs of aging.

Lower Facelift

This type of facelift targets the bottom third of the face. It’s an astute way to reduce deep nasolabial folds, eliminate jowls, enhance the jaw, and lift sagging mouth corners. The procedure is similar to other facelift types. Your doctor will make a discreetly placed incision along the hairline and ears.

This type of facelift is common for patients that want to enjoy a more youthful appearance by decreasing the signs of aging. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for facelift surgery.

Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction surgery can be used for sculpting the body and eliminating any unwanted fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is generally performed on hips, buttocks, thighs, love handles, saddlebags, breasts, back, neck, arms, and ankles.

It can be combined with other procedures for creating the desired shape. Liposuction is one of the most popular and safest cosmetic procedures. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides liposuction body contouring surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities.

Considering Liposuction

You should choose liposuction cosmetic surgery if you:

  • Have localized fat deposits that are not in proportion with the rest of your body
  • Want sleeker contour and more definition in certain areas of the body
  • Have good skin elasticity since liposuction only removes fat and doesn’t help with skin tightening

Liposuction Mechanism

Liposuction uses suction to remove fat from the body. A thin, small, and blunt tipped tube called cannula is inserted through small incisions in the skin. Your cosmetic surgeon will move the tube under the skin to dislodge fat deposits and suction them out. There are various techniques that can be used for facilitating liposuction from SmartLipo (a new laser liposuction technology) to the more conventional approaches.

Tumescent Liposuction

This involves a wetting solution that contains local anesthetic, such as lidocaine and IV fluid. It is injected in the body to make the blood vessels shrink or constrict. Liposuction can be performed while the patient remains under local anesthesia. It minimizes blood loss and reduces bleeding and pain after surgery.

Suction-assisted Liposuction (SAL)

This is the most traditional form of liposuction plastic surgery that removes fat using vacuum technique.

Power-assisted Liposuction (PAL)

This is similar to SAL with the addition of a tool for increasing the cannula motion. This approach speeds up the procedure.

Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction (UAL)

In this procedure, a special handpiece is used for transmitting energy for loosening and melting fat. The procedure allows for more fat to be removed. It is recommended for dense fat in larger areas, typically in male patients.

VASER

This is a popular variation of UAL and makes use of an ultrasonic cannula with multiple grooves for dissipating energy evenly. It improves fat disruption and removal.

Laser-assisted Liposuction (LAL)

LAL, such as SlimLipo and SmartLipo is a recent addition. Laser works like ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty for disrupting fat cells and making fat removal less traumatic and more efficient.

How Long do the Results Last?

Liposuction surgery generally provides permanent results because fat cells are removed. Your body contours and shape may be affected by aging, weight gain, family genes, pregnancy, and lifestyle factors.

It is important that you maintain stable weight and healthy habits for best liposuction results. Fat may not get stored in the cells that are removed during liposuction, but it may get stored in other body areas. Hence, you should continue following a healthy diet and exercise regimen.

For best results, you should keep your follow-up appointments with the cosmetic surgeon. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for liposuction fat reduction and body sculpting surgery.

Rhinoplasty Surgery

Nose job or rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that patients use for improving the appearance of their nose. People can seek to improve the appearance of their nose because of a wide variety of conditions.

In many cases, patients seek an improvement to the nasal dorsum or the front of the nose. This is particularly in case of patients that have a prominent bump. Other patients may be concerned with the appearance of the nasal tip, especially if it is bulbous or poorly defined.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides rhinoplasty surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

  • Shape, size, and angle of the nose is improved
  • Structural problems that cause congestion or restrict breathing can be improved
  • Rhinoplasty can improve a patient’s self-confidence and self-image

Nose Surgery Procedure

Your rhinoplasty surgeon will make incisions for accessing the cartilage and bones after numbing the area. This can be done using two general techniques – open and endonasal. The size of your nose can be increased or reduced by removing or adding bone and cartilage to the nose. You can also adjust the supporting the structure inside the nose or shorten or lengthen its size.

  • Tip of the nose can be remodeled using tip grafts made from cartilage. The nasal tip can be made longer, thinner, shorter, or more uplifted.
  • Skin and other soft tissues can be remodeled for assuming the shape of the underlying structure
  • Fat grafts or tissue fillers can be added for increasing volume in target areas

Incision Approaches

Your cosmetic surgeon can perform the procedure using two main incision approaches – open or endonasal (internal). There are other ways to augment the nose or smooth surface deformities besides these incision options.

For instance, autologous cartilage grafts can be removed from the nasal septum for restructuring the nose. Septum is the wall within the nose that divides one nasal air passage from the other.

Rib or ear cartilage can also be used if bone and cartilage have already been removed from the septum. In some cases, bone from the skull can also be removed. Solid silicone implants can also be inserted. However, these are foreign materials. It is recommended to use natural cartilage is available.

Open Rhinoplasty

The incisions will be made outside the nasal wall during an open rhinoplasty. Another small access incision will be made on the underside between the nostrils that connect with other incisions made inside the nose.

Advocates for open rhinoplasty state that it fully opens the nose to provide better visual. It also provides a more direct route for surgical manipulation.

Endonasal Rhinoplasty

The incisions are made in the nasal passage for this type of rhinoplasty. The incisions are hidden and invisible after this nose reshaping plastic surgery. Advocates for this procedure claim that it permits limited dissection of the tissues.

It offers excellent visual of nasal structures and eliminates visible scarring at the base of the nose. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for nose job.

Will The Fat Cells Grow Back After Liposuction? | Beverly HillsThe fat cells that are eliminated with liposuction plastic surgery usually do not return in most cases. The body will not produce new fat cells as long as the patient maintains a stable body weight after lipo, or even puts on a moderate amount of weight over the years.

The adult human body cannot usually manufacture new fat cells. Therefore, patients who undergo liposuction will experience permanent fat loss, and the fat cells that are removed from a specific site will not regrow.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie MD provides liposuction body contouring procedure to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities.

Fat Cell Growth with Significant Weight Gain

In case the patient puts on a moderate amount of weight in the years after liposuction surgery, the remaining fat cells in the treated sites will merely grow larger. They will collect more fat within the existing cells membranes.

But if the patient puts on a substantial amount of weight (for instance, ten percent of the body weight or more), there may be new fat cells development in various areas of the body. This could potentially include sites that have been previously treated liposuction surgery.

If an adult puts on a comparatively large amount of body weight, it will lead to an increase in the number of fat cells (lipocytes) that would be formed from the existing pleuripotential connective tissue cells via a process of differentiation. This process involves the existing connective tissue cells initially changing into immature fat cells (called lipoblasts).

After that, the lipoblasts will slowly develop into mature fat cells at the patient gradually puts on weight. But comparatively lesser fat would accumulate in the liposuction treated areas.

Therefore, the patient may still experience the body shaping benefits of liposuction to a certain extent, even if they put on a large amount of weight.

Safe Volume of Fat Cell Reduction with Liposuction

An experienced plastic surgeon would take a conservative approach to fat elimination with liposuction. The safe fat removal limit with liposuction in a single treatment session ranges between six to eight pounds or around three to four liters. This may differ slightly depending on the patient’s body weight, health, fat deposit accumulation, and other factors.

In case more fat is eliminated in one session, it could present a higher risk of complications for the patient. Certain patients may need more fat removal than six to eight pounds. The plastic surgeon may recommend liposuction in two to three phases for such patients.

They would space the liposuction sessions at least one month apart. Every phase would be undertaken as a separate liposuction cosmetic surgery.

Cosmetic Limitations with Excessive Fat Removal

Other than the health risks with excessive fat removal, the patient will have a higher probability of developing sagging or loose skin, dimpling, and folds in the treated sites. In case the fat deposits have been present for an extended period in a specific site, they could cause the skin to stretch permanently and lose elasticity.

If a significant amount of fat is eliminated from the site, it will cause the site to deflate, and the skin may sag. Such patients may need to combine liposuction with a breast lift, lower body lift, or tummy tuck depending on the treated site.

How much weight can I lose by liposuction? | Beverly Hills For nearly three decades, liposuction has continued to rank among the more popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the US.

Liposuction is designed to improved body contours in targeted areas by eliminating excess fat tissue deposits, which are stubborn and resistant to diet or exercise.

Patients often ask whether liposuction can also help them lose weight, and to what extent. During the initial consultation, the patient should feel free to ask questions of this nature, and make an informed choice after getting complete clarity on what liposuction can or cannot do for them.

A dedicated surgeon will provide transparent information to the patient on these issues and help them make the right decision. Cordial board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie MD provides liposuction to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and other towns and suburbs in this region of the country.

Fat Loss vs. Weight Loss Procedures

Many patients are unclear about the difference between fat loss and weight loss procedures, and consider them to be synonymous.

However, a fat loss procedure focuses selectively on the removal of unhealthy, exercise and diet resistant fat cells in certain pockets of the body, which may be causing unsightly bulges and compromising the overall body contours.

A weight loss procedure, on the other hand, is designed for overweight or obese candidates who may also be suffering from excessive weight related medical issues such as hypertension or diabetes. Bariatric surgery is an established medical procedure to address the needs of people who want to reduce a significant amount of body weight.

Liposuction, as opposed to bariatric surgery, is a fat loss surgical procedure that can be performed on one or more areas of the body to improve contours. Advanced techniques have made liposuction a less invasive body contouring surgery today. Unlike weight loss procedures, liposuction does not require a patient to undergo a major diet plan.

Liposuction Makes You Look Slimmer

Liposuction is aimed at reshaping the body through fat loss, but it is not a weight loss procedure. Patients should note that weight loss may relatively easier to achieve through diet and exercise, but stubborn fat deposits in certain areas are harder to remove even with a strict diet and lifestyle regimen.

The aesthetic effect of enhanced body contours with liposuction is that a person will appear naturally slimmer. This could give an appearance of weight loss, even though it is actually loss of unwanted fat cells.

Fat Loss is Permanent

While patients should not expect a dramatic reduction in body weight with liposuction, they can be sure that their fat loss will be permanent. In an adult, the fat cells once eliminated will not re-grow. However, if the patient puts on more weight over the years, their figure could become a larger version of their new body shape achieved through liposuction.

This can happen because the remaining fat cells in the body will grow in size if body weight increases. Therefore, to achieve long lasting and best possible aesthetic benefits with liposuction, patients should try to maintain a balanced diet and active lifestyle in the long run.

More Men Are Getting Plastic Surgery | Beverly Hills | Los AngelesThe American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) reports an increase in the number of men seeking plastic surgery.

According to a June 2017 survey, men attested to being “extremely likely” to consider a cosmetic procedure. A little less than half stated that they want to undergo a procedure to feel more confident. Another quarter said they sought to “look younger” to remain competitive in their workplace.

Experts explain that while various procedures remain largely similar when performed on either sex, the nuances of the procedures differ dramatically between men and women. For instance, rhinoplasty seeks to enhance the form and function of the nose regardless of the patient’s gender.

The techniques used to attain a masculine and refined nose vary vastly from those used to achieve a feminine and beautiful nose structure. This makes it vital for men to identify a plastic surgeon with experience in administering procedures on males.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie MD provides a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

What Men Want

The ASAPS released statistics from 2017 earlier this year which indicated that the most sought-after surgical procedures for men are eye-lift surgery, liposuction, tummy tucks, breast reduction, and face-lifts.

Analysts indicate that in the past five years, there has been a 23 percent rise in liposuction and a 12 percent rise in abdominoplasty in men as well as a 30 percent rise in male breast reductions.

Older men tend to seek more minimally invasive procedures for the face to appear younger. On the other hand, younger men focus more on improving the appearance of their bodies.

Almost 100,000 men received filler injections in 2017 which is a 99 percent increase since the year 2000. Botox injection use among men has quadrupled in the same period.

The premium on youthfulness at the workplace has led to an increase in male plastic surgery as well.

Rhinoplasty for a Masculine Nose

A 2016 report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery indicates that elective rhinoplasty (nose job) is one of the most sought-after procedures by men. There are no standard procedures to make a nose appear manly and attractive as an appealing nose is proportional to other facial features, and this proportion will differ between men.

In general, a manly nose is not too small but straight and refined. It is always important to find an expert surgeon. But in the case of rhinoplasty, it becomes even more crucial.

Jaw Enhancement Surgery

Many men are seeking a stronger and better-defined jawline, especially if they exercise routinely. This can be achieved through dermal fillers or jaw implants.

Dermal fillers comprise hyaluronic acid (a natural compound found in the human body) and are injected into the treatment areas in the face. These fillers sustain for about six to nine months depending on how fast the body breaks down the HA.

Conversely, implants are permanent, but the process is more invasive. The surgeon places a tiny incision on the inside of the cheek (inside the mouth to make scarring inconspicuous) and inserts a small implant in the patient’s jaw. At times, jaw implants are placed along with chin implants to square out the entire jawline.

Astute plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie MD receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures.
