Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction surgery can be used for sculpting the body and eliminating any unwanted fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is generally performed on hips, buttocks, thighs, love handles, saddlebags, breasts, back, neck, arms, and ankles.

It can be combined with other procedures for creating the desired shape. Liposuction is one of the most popular and safest cosmetic procedures. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides liposuction body contouring surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities.

Considering Liposuction

You should choose liposuction cosmetic surgery if you:

  • Have localized fat deposits that are not in proportion with the rest of your body
  • Want sleeker contour and more definition in certain areas of the body
  • Have good skin elasticity since liposuction only removes fat and doesn’t help with skin tightening

Liposuction Mechanism

Liposuction uses suction to remove fat from the body. A thin, small, and blunt tipped tube called cannula is inserted through small incisions in the skin. Your cosmetic surgeon will move the tube under the skin to dislodge fat deposits and suction them out. There are various techniques that can be used for facilitating liposuction from SmartLipo (a new laser liposuction technology) to the more conventional approaches.

Tumescent Liposuction

This involves a wetting solution that contains local anesthetic, such as lidocaine and IV fluid. It is injected in the body to make the blood vessels shrink or constrict. Liposuction can be performed while the patient remains under local anesthesia. It minimizes blood loss and reduces bleeding and pain after surgery.

Suction-assisted Liposuction (SAL)

This is the most traditional form of liposuction plastic surgery that removes fat using vacuum technique.

Power-assisted Liposuction (PAL)

This is similar to SAL with the addition of a tool for increasing the cannula motion. This approach speeds up the procedure.

Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction (UAL)

In this procedure, a special handpiece is used for transmitting energy for loosening and melting fat. The procedure allows for more fat to be removed. It is recommended for dense fat in larger areas, typically in male patients.

VASER

This is a popular variation of UAL and makes use of an ultrasonic cannula with multiple grooves for dissipating energy evenly. It improves fat disruption and removal.

Laser-assisted Liposuction (LAL)

LAL, such as SlimLipo and SmartLipo is a recent addition. Laser works like ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty for disrupting fat cells and making fat removal less traumatic and more efficient.

How Long do the Results Last?

Liposuction surgery generally provides permanent results because fat cells are removed. Your body contours and shape may be affected by aging, weight gain, family genes, pregnancy, and lifestyle factors.

It is important that you maintain stable weight and healthy habits for best liposuction results. Fat may not get stored in the cells that are removed during liposuction, but it may get stored in other body areas. Hence, you should continue following a healthy diet and exercise regimen.

For best results, you should keep your follow-up appointments with the cosmetic surgeon. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for liposuction fat reduction and body sculpting surgery.
