Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery Procedure Steps | Beverly HillsAccording to the figures of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation ranked as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the US in 2015. The breast surgeon will create a customized implant surgery plan and discuss all steps of the procedure with the patient during the initial consultation.

Once the patient understands the steps involved in the procedure, she will feel more confident, her anxiety levels will reduce, and she will know exactly what to expect during the surgery. Dr. Gary Motykie MD is a board certified plastic surgeon providing breast augmentation to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.

Anesthesia

Breast implant surgery is a major procedure, which will usually be performed with the patient under general anesthesia. In a few cases, local anesthesia with IV sedation may be used. Anesthesia is the first step in the breast augmentation surgery, which will be performed by an anesthesiologist or a registered anesthetist nurse.

They will usually monitor the patient throughout the surgery. Following the procedure, the patient will be moved to a recovery area for a few hours until she feels relieved from the effects of anesthesia.

Incision Placement

The breast surgeon will begin the procedure by making an incision in the breast crease, under the arm, or around the areola. In a few cases, the incision may be made in the navel area. The incisions will be kept as discreet as possible in order to reduce visible scarring. Incision placement will be made as per the pre-determined surgical plan prepared in consultation with the patient.

Insertion of Implants

Through the incisions, the surgeon will carve a breast pocket to place the implant. The position of the implant may be in front of the pectoral muscle and right behind the breast tissue, or below the pectoral muscle. Implant placement will be decided beforehand in accordance with the patient’s surgical and aesthetic goals, the size of implants, and breast anatomy.

Wound Closure

Once the breast implants have been adjusted in their position, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures. If the sutures are removable, the surgeon will schedule an appointment in about a week to 10 days to remove them. In case of dissolvable sutures, removal is not required, but drainage tubes will have to be removed anyway.

Following the breast augmentation surgery, the patient should particularly keep the incision area clean to minimize the infection risks. As far as possible, the area should not come in contact with dirt, and the incision site should not be submerged in water. Strenuous activities and exercises should be avoided for two to three weeks to allow the incisions to heal well.

Drains and Bandages

Drain tubes will be placed beneath the incision area to collect excess fluid. The incisions will be covered with bandages to support faster healing. The patient will be required to wear a surgical bra for a few weeks after breast augmentation. Dr. Gary Motykie MD receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for breast augmentation surgery.
